1. You don't recover without help from someone. Find another doctor. Chances are you are transferring your self-hatred to the doctor right now.
2. This is a really tough problem that is almost never something you can overcome on your own. It is important that you feel your doctor can help you, so you may need to change therapists. Just be sure you're not angry with him because he is trying to get you to change, since this problem will come up with whoever is helping you. I don't know your circumstances, but the fastest way to get a handle on something like this is often inpatient treatment, so you might consider that.
3. If your medical doctor doesn't work for you, get another doctor. And you might want to get psychological help. A relative recovered from a severe eating disorder with medical and psychological help.
4. Your doctor has probably already told you to pay attention to the things that set you off with the eating. You are going to have to work on YOUR MIND and the way you think about food. For instance, you know you are not hungry if you've eaten within the last hour or two, so tell yourself that you aren't hungry and DON'T PUT THE FOOD IN YOUR MOUTH. Stay away from the refrigerator and the kitchen until meal time and don't leave snacks around in other areas of the house.
You don't eat the car keys, the photos, the toilet tissue, so why eat everything in the refrigerator? You need to focus on eating healthy, not just eating out of HABIT. Break the habit!
5. Find a friend with the same problem--in person, on-line, in church, anywhere. Motivate each other to control your habits. Being a health care professional, I can tell you that the only thing your doctor will do is give you about the same advice. They usually are very reluctant to prescribe any of the older diet drugs such as phentermine, and the only new one is Xenical--now available without a prescription. I can't remember the name-but your pharmacist will tell you.
The only proven, tried and true method for weight loss and maintenance are life style changes. It seems impossible, but search within yourself and your diet pal for motivaters--something as simple as a new size 10 swim suit, or to reduce the threat of diabetes that your doctor has discussed with you.
Whatever works for you, make a plan and TRY to stick with it. Don't quit when you occasionally fail; it is human to do so. Remember that one day's failure doesn't outdo the success you've had for a week.
Above all--don't condemn or hate yourself. You are still the same person no matter what.
And if all else fails--change doctors!
